Ready for something different?

Through the wonders of agriculture, refrigeration, and trans-oceanic shipping, we can get a wide variety of fruits throughout the year. Our ancestors, even of the recent past, would be envious.

But in many ways we're missing out on nature's bounty simply because we don't take the time to eat straight off the bush. Take a look at some of these interesting edibles -- many of them can be grown in your own back yard.

Averrhoa carambola

Star fruit

Outer skin is waxy in appearance but thin enough to eat. Shaped like an apple that's desiccated. Taste is light and juicy but without much sweetness. Almost like celery. The inner core has an apple-core like fiber with tiny seeds.
