This very tender plant can only survive nighttime temperatures of 40� Fahrenheit. Sesamum indicum needs summer days with high heat. Full sun is ideal for Sesame (also known as benne and gingili). Sesamum indicum is known as hei zhi ma in Chinese. It usually does best in well drained soils.

The seeds are nutty and contain a useful oil. Sesamum indicum is most often used as oil. Sesame (sometimes called benne and gingili) has too many possible beneficial herbal uses to fully enumerate. Sesamum indicum has an annual life cycle. Leaves: Sesame (locally known in some parts as benne and gingili) has 3" to 5" oval leaves. Flowers: This plant has 1" bell shaped flowers which emerge between stem and leaf. The flowers are usually a white color.
