Garden notes
Castilleja chromosa has a good supply of nectar that hummingbirds feed on. Desert paintbrush can survive very cold winters with annual averages as low as -30 Fahrenheit. It needs a bit of a cold spell with temperatures below 15 Fahrenheit to do its best. This plant does best in full sun. It usually does best in well drained soils. This species must be planted with a host plant (such as blue gamma grass) nearby, as it is partially parasitic.
