The bark of Rhus chinensis as well as the gallnuts has been used in traditional fabric dyeing. A range of possible colors can be produced by Sumac including yellow, yellowish brown and brownish black. Sumac is used in Japan for dyeing. Lye, lime or iron is optionally added as mordants to fix the color to the fabric.
