Garden notes
The flowers of Ulex europaeus have a mild rank smelling smell. The flowers of Furze (also known as whin and gorse) have been used in traditional fabric dyeing. Yellow is the most typical color produced by this plant. Gorse is used in Eire for dyeing. It is used in dyeing wool. When dyeing with this plant, alum is used as a mordant to fix the color to the fabric.
