This somewhat tender plant can only survive cold winter nights that dip to 20� Fahrenheit. Zingiber officinale needs summer days with high heat. Ginger does well in rich soils. Zingiber officinale is known as sheng jian in Chinese and singabera in Sanskrit. Light shade is needed for this plant to do its best. It does well in moist, well drained soils.
