Land that is adjacent to an ocean is especially hostile to most garden variety plants. Few can survive
the intense solar ultraviolet, the scouring sand and the salt drenched soils.
As a clue, look for species with the "maritima" epitath -- there's quite a few,
from Abronia maritima to Zinnia maritima.
