Botanical research is carried out throughout the world in outdoor laboratories open to the sun, rain, wind, and soil of the local ecology.  These living labs are the botanical gardens and arboretum associated with universities and government agencies.  Nearly all of them are open to the public. Of interest to most of us is to see native plants grown in their full glory accompanied by mature trees.  Where the famous estate gardens excel in presenting us with spectacular displays of exotics that we may not otherwise see, botanical gardens present the world as it would be without human inventions.  And since each garden is in a different ecosystem, each has unique species for us to enjoy.
